People new to Mastodon sitting there waiting for the social media experience to come to them are missing the point.

Unlike elsewhere you aren't spoonfed a readymade network of "things you might like".

Instead you have to cultivate your own network, and you do that by boosting, talking and supporting i.e. By doing weird stuff like being sociable.and being willing to engage in conversation.

@GrumpyMark

This so very much.

When I first got here it was like "It's empty. There's nobody here" but once i started clicking on tags and accounts that boost, it didn't take long to find my community. It helps that I'm in an incredibly cool instance that's moderated well and has a creative and robust art community on it.

Thanks for that tip... which is logical. But like any new kid on the block - this for most new users like me is a bit intimidating and risky to our fragile egos. And as most artists like myself are basically introverts ... growing wings is going to be a painful process here. But I'm up for it. 🤔

@GrumpyMark it's so funny that people are complaining about the way things work here when all this time i've been bending over backwards to curate my twitter experiecne to specifically avoid all of those kinds of manipulation and spam, never used the "home" feed, blocking every corporation online, block lists of hundreds of thousands of shills and clout chasers, i finally have peace now, not only does mastodon not work this way, the instance i'm on explicitly forbids all of that sort of activity
