Do you use the fedi.tips website? If so, could you let me know your opinion about the front page?

At the moment it has all the links to tips in a complete list, so that people can browse and click on exactly what they want answered.

However, some people have said they find this complete list approach overwhelming.

What do you think?

@feditips I use it and share it whenever I see people looking lost. The answer to Mastodon, the Fediverse and Everything! (almost): fedi.tips/

@feditips seems like “basic tips” and “beginners start here” would be similar—if I’m a beginner, don’t I want the basics? That’s just one example of how a newbie might be confused. In general, just looking at such long lists is overwhelming.

@feditips Still, I have it bookmarked.

@feditips

I like and recommend it and have used it a number of times when I was new.

I like it because it has

- a shortcut / categories overview in the menu on top

- a detailed index of all the topics at the bottom.

Maybe people who didn't grow up with books find the idea of an index overwhelming. I find it actually extremely useful. Everything at one glance.

@feditips could it be that people choose option C because of option A?

@feditips being able to use ctrl f on one page to get where i need to without diving through 10 pages is nice

@feditips As I recall, there is no search facility. This would be a good addition so that I can actually find what I'm looking for.

@feditips
I like having them all on one page. Maybe breaking them up visually would be less intimidating? If it's newbies who find it intimidating, maybe make the "beginners" section link more prominent?

@feditips I need to add comment to my vote. While it is useful to have a full list, particularly when I'm using my laptop to browse, on a smartphone or tablet, that's a lot of look through. It just feels different.

@feditips it’s good to have it on a single page to be able to search but … maybe present a list of those 7 top categories at the top like a table of contents. Some small UI improvements will go a long way. But it is a valuable resource to many people.

@feditips I kept the page open in another tab for my first month, so I could look up questions as they arose. There were plenty of less link-orientated Intro articles posted to birbsite at the time - the two types of info sharing worked well together for me.

@feditips I've used it to find a couple of things but yes, a better way to organise/display the links would make it more approachable. Decent internal search function maybe?

@feditips

I used the website a few times and I have to say that the list is quite long.
However, I knew what I was looking for and I had no problems.

Maybe a preventive path selection could be useful (eg. see the full list or a step-by-step kind of thing)?

Also, the "DON’T FEEL OVERWHELMED!" warning worked well for me.

Thanks for all the info gathered on the website btw :awesome_rotate:

@feditips It's fine to me, though I found it when I was already familiar with everything and didn't need it as much. It has a similar setup to a FAQ page, like on a business website, which I like. If I'm looking for something specific I can just search the page.

@feditips Even the navigation menu is a bit confusing. Why Contents instead of Home? Basic & Advanced tips are the levels after ‘Beginners start here?’

I wonder if the Q&A format would be better served with a Q&A oriented CMS, like the StackExchange sites. All the Qs get their own page, and there’s an autocompleting search box (start typing and it shows matching post titles).

@feditips I do not, yet. I'm new here. Heading to the site now to check it out. I need tips.

@feditips I find the color scheme extremely harsh & offensive to my old eyes. I recommend you entertain using a color palette like Gruvbox or Nordic with good text contrast.
