You can change its colours quickly and easily using your server's "Custom CSS" feature, which is in the admin controls.

@feditips @atomicpoet that's neat. I'd kill for this to be a by-user thing, but to prevent overloading servers, have the custom user css affect only the user and the site just takes from a specific file on their PC

@feditips one custom CSS we found very useful on our instance is the one below, marking DMs in a different colour in the home feed.
