@nikkiana basically helps to think of posts as copies of letters that delivered around to servers. if a server doesn't have a reason to get the letter, it won't know about its contents or its existence. Mastodon *could* change how it works to always constantly fetch all posts whenever it looks at a profile but that would be a big performance hit on the server

@darius That makes sense.

Somebody from my server pointed out that I could just copy/paste the link of the toot from the other server and manually import it, and that worked just fine for my purposes.

What shows up in the federated timeline is all of the toots from the servers that host users that other users on your server follow?
