In case you missed it, you do not need to use the official Mastodon app! Third party Mastodon apps tend to have more features, and many people prefer them.

Mastodon uses free open source technical standards, so all apps have equal access to all of Mastodon's features.

There are lots of third party Mastodon apps, here are a few examples to get you started:

:android: If you're on Android, try Tusky, Fedilab or Tooot

:apple_inc: If you're on iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes or Ivory

@feditips literally every 3rd party app is better than the official app.

@feditips
I first used the official Mastodon app, but it didn't show alt-text. Complete no-go. So I tried Metatext and ended up using Toot!, although I found all the animations rather distracting and would have liked to turn them off. Took a lot of fiddling with themes, too, until I liked it.

Now I found that Mastodon is updated and finally shows alt-text, so I am very happy to be able to return to it. I feel it has everything I need.

Best option is still the website version on my laptop :-)

@feditips I use Megalodon and tooot interchangeablely.

I like Megalodon's accessibility but I also like tooot's Twitter-like interface. If I can get one app that can just look like the Twitter version of Mastodon, that would be great

I use the Mastodon mobile web app on Android. Has all the features including notifications. Best user experience I've had so far.

@feditips for iOS ice cubes is far and away the best, and unlike ivory, doesn’t require an expensive subscription to use it! 🧊🧊🧊

@feditips I use Tusky, and I like the app a lot. Going to try Tooot right now, though. Thanks for the advice. Cheers. 💜

@feditips I like Mastodon (PWA)
To install the Mastodon PWA on your phone, simply open your preferred instance in Chrome for Android. Once loaded, tap the three dots menu button in Chrome and choose “Install app.” This will add a Mastodon icon to your home screen and app drawer.
