The nicest way to use Mastodon on a computer is probably through your server's website.

Your server's website address will usually be the same as your server's name, for example mastodon.coffee's website is at mastodon.coffee

You can log in there using the same ID you use on the app.

However, you can only log in on your own server's website. You cannot log in on another server's site because each server is independent. (It would be like trying to log in on Yahoo Mail with a GMail ID)

@feditips the @ivory desktop beta has replaced the web app for me. It’s a much nicer experience.

@feditips nice is always a relative thing. your home server is certainly the most reliable (most of the time -ours had a UI caching issue for a bit, now resolved).

#Elk is one web app (PWA support, just like the main app) that is more twitter-like, including chronological threads.

#Sengi is a nice one if you need multiple logins in the same client and liked the tweetdeck layout.

@feditips

I'd describe the official web UI as "the most reliable", but not "the nicest" on desktop.

That title would go to Ivory for Mac.

@feditips @Sidlowkid This type of diffuse horse manure is exactly why Mastodon is still currently worthless. That everybody on your platform keeps having to "explain" what ought be obvious is on you. Get your heads out of your asses and just make it all usable.

@feditips I would say that elk.zone is more pleasant than just using my instance's website, though, because if I post something that catches on and has a few dozen favorites and boosts, one item shows up in notifications instead of 20+ separate copies. Hopefully some future Mastodon software update could add that obvious optimization.

@feditips If you have a Droid phone or Chrome on your desktop, elk is the best client I've seen. It's a web app, so you don't even have to install it from the Play Store. It is buggy, but it feels like the old Twitter app. Super responsive.

@feditips I thought the sequence of the events was vice versa. someone gets registered on the server website, then they find out there are nice apps...

@feditips I'm using side panel in @Vivaldi with an official web client. Very convenient setup.

@feditips I’m really loving using the Mona beta on the desktop. In fact, I’m using it to write this post! Way better experience than the website in my opinion.
