If you're tired of the day's particular discourse, at least on the Mastodon web client (mobile or desktop), press the settings button in the upper right of your home timeline and turn off boosts globally. Turn it back on later when the discourse storm has passed.

What I've learned from having boosts off is that most of discourse is passed on via boosts. The people I follow directly will post about it some, but usually not enough to take over the timeline.

(Muting words is a good option too.)

@darius It's also nice that you can set a timer on your filters, so words automatically get unmuted when the filter expires. Great idea for when you only need a temporary reprieve.

@darius but how will I know how people feel about quotetoots‽ 😂 😭

@darius The tooot client now also supports hiding boosts. It’s totally changed my timeline, for the better.

@darius
I can't find that setting.

@darius I've been trying a 3-valued hide|include|only option.

This UX, with no images and formatted text, optimizes for scanning. I thought I'd want `hide` to be the default, but so far I'm still using `include` first, for an overview, then switching to `hide`. I'm not yet sure whether or how `only` is worth keeping as an option!

@darius I cannot stand contextless boosts. They just feel like ads.

@darius oh the irony of boosting this advice. Much appreciated, so far I've only been disabling boosts for (so many) individuals. This makes it easier, cleaner, and quickly undoable!

@darius Somewhat ironically, I boosted this… I don’t mind “the discourse” but it’s good to easily toggle it off, this is a solid tip.

@darius

And here is Yet Another example of how the quote-post issue is going to result in the further Balkanization (google it) of Mastodon

I see no "turn off boosts globally" in either toot! on iOS or in a Brave browser tab on my desktop anywhere on my home timeline, either on iOS or Brave/Ubuntu Linux desktop

How much more fragmented (believe the technical term is "forked") will the Mastodon distro have to become just to please a couple very pissy Famous People over here from Twitter?

@darius This is very helpful to know. Thank you!

@darius So, I have been surprised by the (seeming) backlash against what is termed "quote tweets" elsewhere, and I wonder if a similar feature were to emerge here, if people who abhorred it couldn't manage to turn it off the same way. Thank you for this tip, by the way, that I had not known about.

@darius You can also hide boosts from individual accounts.
