@jonny It would also hopefully not only be about "is it real". We could write a bot for that. 🤡
It was more an example that it seems like there are more people interested in talking to scientists than people who talk to scientists. If we can understand why and fix that, it seems we would have solved a problem.

@petergleick No. The people who started this are quite data privacy conscious.
Translation the easy way would mean sending it to a company. No idea whether they are only paid in data or would also require money for automatic use. Doing machine translation yourself is not easy. There is an open source package nowadays, but it is clearly not as good as the main providers.
On this topic, I guess most people use Google Translate. But I think that Deepl.com is much better.

@labradorice There is no way for users to add other local time lines. People here like their privacy and the moderation rules differ per server.
Admins can do some complicated things to make this happen if both servers agree, if I understand it correctly.
So best follow people to get those posts in your home time line. In the advanced web interface you can search for a hashtag and then pin the output as a permanent column.

Feel free to write another introduction later on. I am here two years and plan to write one next week. There are so many new folks signing up.
In all posts, but especially in introduction posts it is helpful to use often used hashtags. It is harder to find people here and hashtags are thus more important and used more liberally than on Twitter.

@Ruth_Mottram I switch from Matlab to R so that more people could run, read and reuse my code.
I guess, Julia is at least free, so people could run your code, but my impression is that not many scientists can code in Julia.
So I would only use Julia if there are clear benefits that override such community considerations.

@pmeyfroidt Whether to display the number of boosts and favorites is a design choice of the (web) app.
On the web app you only see these numbers if you click on a post; that is on purpose so that a post is not judged by its numbers.
The mobile apps are a bit more like Twitter.

@Lilpixieglass It is the business model of Silicon Valley, you grow fast by being nice to users and dumping as much venture capital as you can get.
Once you have a saturated market and monopoly (in case of Twitter due to the network effect), you start milking the system.
That is a very successful and profitable business model, but really bad for the economy and consumers. You can fight it with mandates on interoperability and strong monopoly controls.

@Fisionchips I do not think general guidance on how to use CWs is possible.
Listen to the people in your community which CWs they appreciate.
Whether people follow you or repost your posts will depend on your use of CWs and in that way you shape your own community.
Using a CW does not necessarily mean the post gets less readers or people engaging with the ideas.
Except if your server has rules on this, you determine how to use them and who to gather around you.

@rupdecat Posts here are already twice as long as on the bird site. 😎
We just wanted to start a poll on how long posts should be here. Then all the new folks came and I guess we now better wait a bit for people to come in and make themselves at home.
It should be possible to create a more constructive discussion system here. Outrage is not rewarded here.
Real scientific discussions in the end will probably have to take place at blogs and the scientific literature.
