Interesting... mastodon.online (often used for testing upcoming features) now has a new public web page, see the attached screenshot.

This is the view *without* being logged in, and shows the Explore tab by default, with options to see Local and Federated. Try it yourself at mastodon.online

There hasn't been a new Mastodon release since May, yet there are some important new features now active on mastodon.online but not yet released in the main version, including hashtag following, built-in translation etc. Post editing isn't available, but it's been part of the code for a whie now in a deactivated form.

It's unclear why there hasn't been a new release in such a long time as new features pile up waiting to go out. Are they planning to release lots of important features all at once in some kind of mega-release?

@feditips Blind guess: Maybe it's "just" due to testing and QA. Mastodon gradually becomes more visible with each and every Twitter exodus, and the more it does, the more it's possibly helpful to have releases in which web UI and mobile app work somehow seamlessly together and most of the important features do as they're supposed to. Maybe from that point of view, 4 months between releases aren't that long a time. 😉

FediTips has moved!

I like the way non-users can see the trending posts etc in Explore, it gives them a better feel for what they might see on the server and the Fediverse.

However, one thing greatly concerns me about this new landing page, the server's identity is invisible to outsiders. There's no longer any custom picture or custom intro text, and it would make servers look identical.

It's also quite hard to see the "about this server" link to look up more info including the server's rules.

@feditips Well, now also non-logged users can see that "nothing is popular now" in three of these tabs - Posts, News and For You.
When I'm logged in I see this label too.

@feditips This hasn't made it obvious that you can sign up for mastodon.online at mastodon.online/about, but if you try to click "Create account" while in this interface, you'll be redirected to joinmastodon.com/servers instead.

mastodon.social is also open for signup, alongside mastodon.online.

@feditips when I hit the #Mastodon online hamburger menu with android chrome I get

Due to a bug in our code or a browser compatibility issue, this page could not be displayed correctly.

Try refreshing the page. If that does not help, you may still be able to use Mastodon through a different browser or native app.
