@clinkingdog you correctly diagnosed the issue in your post, the problem is basically that there is no way to tell if something is truly "@" someone unless it's a direct post reply. Twitter of course solved this by just saying "yes it is". I'm trying to dig up the relevant issue and conversation/rationale but actually having trouble finding it!
