Yes, yes they are.

This is one of the most common questions I have received from people coming over from Twitter.

They are so used to algorithms that give visibility to liked posts, they assumed that favouriting did the same thing, and didn't see the point of boosts.

@feditips @rye @sonotaphonomy I hated those on Twitter. If I wanted to retweet a post, I would do so. If I just liked it then that means that I didn't want everyone to see it.

Also annoying is that you could hide someone's retweets but not posts shown to you because of likes.
