This works even for me.. that the UI feels somehow cluttered. The graphical UI chrome that puts boundaries around elements, familiarity of UX patterns.

That said, I think Sourcehut made a lot of improvement in the area over time.

For the broader public it is as @blacklight says also about expectations. They associate more glossy UI with modern software, and textual UI doesn't appeal to them for becoming involved.

Should not overdo it, and good UX is fast and efficient.
