Oh, they'll realize quickly that they can't fuck around with intentionally bad UX for free like they're accustomed to in their centralized products. The social graph not being hostage to them means they'll have to compete with other fediverse software on their own merits. A lot of eye opening is going to happen among Facebook/Meta managers soon. It's gonna be fun to watch 🍿

@dansup yes, we should learn about their implementation, moderation policies etc and THEN rush to block them.

@dansup sounds weird to talk about open source deeds given that they've received a billion euros fine in EU due to privacy violations (transferring data of EU users to US) just recently

@dansup Meta is a public company. That means it has shareholders. It has a fiduciary duty to those shareholders to maximize profit.

The fediverse as it exists is one of if not the greatest threat to traditional centralized social media. That is a problem for a company that owns a few centralized platforms. Simply, Meta is not going to support it out of the goodness of their hearts. They are the biggest player in the field, and they intend to keep it that way.

@dansup there's an enormous difference: React, PyTorch etc were not cornerstones of their core business, social networking is. Somebody else using React or PyTorch isn't a threat to Facebook, the Fediverse expanding outside of their influence is a direct threat to their business model.

@dansup I'm not sure what their f/oss record has to do w/anything. It's all going to be about their behavior, the culture - hell I'll presume they won't inject ads in feeds.

& I would argue the prudent thing for small-instance admins to do is domain-block pre-emptively.

Here's why: We know what Facebook culture is like. We know where Barcelona users will be coming from. Blocking THE domain IS REVERSABLE once they've demonstrated the culture behaves in a way that doesn't harm small instances.

@dansup That seems best/most pragmatic, but they also have a proven track record of doing detrimental behavior then asking for forgiveness. It’s basically their entire m.o.
