@jasonbrooks I suspect many servers would defederate but many wouldn't. But for example: if Tumblr federates that is exactly the situation you are positing. I think it will be very polarizing but ultimately will shake out to "most users don't care if their content is shown next to ads on a remote server as long as they personally can have an ad free experience"

@darius @jasonbrooks This is kind of where I'm at. If users are willing to join a server that will show ads to the users of the server as a way to support itself financially, the only person looking at ads are the members of that instance.

However, if the server then has to do some kind of tracking in order to dial in ads, or uses the data from the fediverse to run analytics that inform ad spend, that's where the community may have something to say.
