I would look at it as measuring the new orbit to calculate the losses, myself.
This issue of cohesiveness is one of the big unknowns about redirecting asteroids -- how well do they hold together?. Right now, we just have guesses.
We did have some info from the OSIRIS-REx sample return about the consistency of the immediate surface of another NEA, but that still leaves a lot unanswered or uncertain.
