You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features.

Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps.

:android: On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot

:apple_inc: On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona

@feditips so can you use these apps to follow or browse kbin or lemmy too? I’m looking for one app that lets me view all these fedi sites

@feditips That's good news because I have been VERY frustrated with the official app on my Mac. I have a little tiny vertical window for postings and discussions that requires a LOT of scrolling, with a HUGE window for just reblogs that are worthless because they don't include the original blogs. It's a mess.

@feditips If I may, what are the key differences between the android apps? Which one would you recommend for somebody who's used to Twitter?

@feditips
I use Ivory. Very pleased.

@feditips I enjoy using the PWA (Progressive Web Application) version of mastodon on my phone. I would say it's a fairly underrated way of navigating mastodon

@feditips i'm on android, and still have not found a phone app that is adequate for accessing all the nice features of Mastodon.

@feditips So funny that this is one of the first posts I see as I'm checking out the new mastodon app for android. I tried it back in November and quickly switched over to Tusky for better functionality. I hope the newly revamped and amped up version I'm trying today will be a big improvement

@feditips

Or just use your browser!

Easy peasy.

@feditips I’ve tried a few of the iOS apps and still prefer the official app for it’s simplicity!

Although I do wish I had an algorithmic feed, since I follow a lot of bots that get fewer interactions (I like some news sprinkled in my feed). Any recs?

@feditips I use Metatext on iOS and it's pretty good, but unfortunately no longer being developed so it'll likely end up being increasingly behind on features

@feditips Of those I've tried, my preferred Android app is Tooot. I just wish they'd fix the faint text used for notifications.

@feditips I can recommend #metatext for #ios

@feditips

Apparently I'm using the, "Fisher Price My First Mastodon," and I'm fine with that. 🙃

@feditips thanks for the tip! Trying out Tusky now, already prefer it to the official app. Being able to follow hashtags in-app is a must IMO.

@feditips Adding MetaText into the options for iPhone, it’s my favorite one so far!
