You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features.

Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps.

:android: On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot

:apple_inc: On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona

@feditips I have tried and liked a couple of apps for Mastodon on my Android phone, but what a like best and am still using is the Mastodon Progressive Web App (PWA). Directions to add it to your phone are on several websites, including:
9to5google.com/2022/11/03/best
It may not work for everyone, but it seems the best for me.

@feditips
🤣 Oh man. There needs to be a "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" skin with primary colors and big fat buttons and a big smiley face somewhere. Oh! And Fisher Price sounds!

@feditips Thank you for this. I’d only been using the official mobile app since I joined and the layout always felt off. Now I know why.

@feditips
I joined Mastodonbooks.net today thinking that I could use the same login at Journo.host. Now I see that that instance won't accept logins hosted on a different server. Please explain. Thank you.

@feditips Each of those apps seems less private than the official client. Although ice cube isn’t to bad toot I’d a little out there for people who care for there privacy

@feditips I've been happy using a browser with the web interface.

I use the advanced option when I want columns for tracking different hashtags. But usually I like the single column view so images are larger.

Just curious - what features have the apps got that make folks want to use them instead? Thanks!

@feditips I’m an app man. Toot! Was my choice for a long time, but Ice Cubes took the podium eventually.

Not all on fedi are fans of Quote, but I think it’s an improvement. That plus multiple local feed follows like on Fedilab was just the winning combination.

Also love the haptic feedback when server ack’s your actions.. Great to know intuitively what your latency is.

@feditips Don't forget Moshidon too! @moshidon has don't a lot to make it a fantastic experience on Android, and it's completely free and open-source too :)
