Mastodon and the Fediverse are at their best when you are following lots of people, not only because you see their posts, but because you also see the posts they share. Seeing lots of shares makes it much easier to discover stuff.

➡️ For tips on finding people to follow click here: fedi.tips/how-to-use-mastodon-

Following people is how discovery works on here. There's no computer algorithm pushing stuff to you, instead there are millions of human beings manually sharing stuff they find interesting.

@feditips Great tips on how to find people, and following lots of people.

@feditips Nice list!
I do wish mastodon on iOS would recognize usernames instead of opening them in the embedded browser…

@feditips I took this tip to heart a while ago and generally follow anyone who shares interesting news or commentary, and I follow back almost everyone who follows me — I figure I can prune later if necessary, but for now, it’s a great way to build my network.

@feditips The fediverse is a biodiverse, not a monoculture. And I live in a biodiverse!

@feditips Since you can follow hashtags now I find this is the best way to find interesting accounts.

@feditips
Thank you!
Would love to see features to opt-in or opt-out being built into Mastodon and a default setting by the instance instead. github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

@feditips I know it's all on your web page but I love that you keep the reminders coming! Thank you!

@feditips The question is who to follow.

I did find George Takei, so that's nice.

@feditips Taken me a few weeks to absorb this, now I’m following widely.

@feditips but if you follow too many you'll never read the posts because there are too many. Without some way of knowing what's popular all I can do is follow a few.
I've peeked at the fediverse feed and it's a firehose, mostly irrelevant and some i would not choose to follow.

@feditips When people engage with my posts, I check out their accounts, with a view to following them. Sometimes I do, sometimes not. But I’m least likely to follow a new account that’s mostly re-blogging other people’s posts. I’ll look closer at an account with original content.

@feditips thanks. I sent instructions to my email so I can take time later working things out. Intend to follow back more. Most posters seem decent. Wish I could find more Anglican and LCSW/therapists. Also gothic cathedral. Thanks again. This is very helpful. On my first night a very patient poster helped me do my header.

I can't follow someone who follows me why?

@feditips what am I missing? Why I try to search for someone I know w their @ name @ server I get nothing. Is there an “actual” way to make that work? I’m confused

@feditips when there are only dildos on the app so far that's not true

This is probably the single biggest weakness of mastodon in general. Having the platform unable to seek out interests you choose and essentially hiding people in their own silos unless you manually dig them up using 3rd parties... This is why so many people are staying on Twitter. While the 'algorithms' have been turned to commercial goals and that has backfired terribly, that isn't necessary to having a simpler, transparent, interest gathering function either.

@feditips I use Malwarebytes extension on Vivaldi. And it reported a malware on Trunk site after I clicked a person link.
