Ahhhh... ok, got you. That's something separate, nothing to do with the Fediverse as such.

It's due to lack of "backfilling" on a federated system.

If an account has never been followed or shared by anyone on your server before, it will appear to be blank. If that happens, the current behaviour of Mastodon is to link to the account's public page on its home server. This public page is up to date, but the downside is that because it's not on your server it's fiddly to interact with.

The most popular suggestion on the Mastodon github page is currently that Mastodon should backfill at least some posts when people come across a blank profile.

Backfilling would automatically fetch posts of that account and display them instead of doing the "browse more from other profile" message.

@feditips Sorry, but I'm not really following ... I've seen the analogy here that the federation is such that we're all phones with unique phone numbers, and anyone can contact us or us them, regardless of who our local phone providers are. This sounds like ... if I can't get through on someone's phone number, I have to figure out who their local phone provider is and contact that phone provider for tech support to just call someone.
