I'm not against adding monetization features in @pixelfed, but only if they work for users and give them 100% of any profit/proceeds.

The easiest way for this is to allow and embrace external links to your own store/platform.

We don't need crypto or some other form of payment in exchange for impressions because we don't have ads, and we aren't in this for money.

A platform for the people, by the people, can thrive this way I think!

Actually, IMO the fediverse is missing an opportunity here.

Optional privacy focused ads (and “promoted content”) could be a thing. A nonprofit open source privacy focused ad platform with support from lemmy, mastodon, pixelfed, etc. could challenge the likes of Google while bringing dollars to the various projects.

Ads themselves aren’t inherently bad. When used sparingly and within context they can be useful for product discovvery, etc.

@dansup @pixelfed why shouldn't the people running the servers be able to monetize at all?

@dansup @pixelfed I definitely think admins should be able to easily monetise instances. I haven’t looked into hosting an instance in a while, but the last time I did I declined to do so because unfortunately I couldn’t see how it wouldn’t end up being an costly distraction.

@dansup each instance should have the option to allow or disallow this, but the “easiest” option would be to give the user the option to offer subscription levels to their followers and allow them to classify their post to different subscription levels. The hard part would be the integration of payment providers (flexibility) by the end-user themselves
