Quick little tip: You don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon.

All links on Mastodon count for 23 characters towards your limit, no matter how many characters they really are.

However, you need to include https:// at the beginning of links to make them clickable.

@feditips Drop the S. Just http://. It’s simpler.

@feditips I think all social networks do this nowadays…minus the HTTPS required part.

@feditips and if you're going to sites without the s after http - don't.

@feditips how does a URL read out to a screen reader? I'm wondering if it's worth using short URLs to make it easier to navigate posts for accessibility

@feditips A little unfair to the people whose links are 10 characters in length 🐷

@feditips Why 23?

@feditips it would be nice if links automatically embedded some part of what was being linked, like a newspaper, headline or image. Like they do at Facebook and Twitter.

@feditips
How much of a.very-long-domain-name.that-m gets displayed?

(reposted as mobile predictive text messed it up..)

@feditips Some instances will suspend you for using link shorteners

@feditips
I don’t click on shortened links (bitly etc).

• They’re #MysteryMeat links that hide the true destination. I want to know where I’m going. (Ideally I’d even like a preview.)
• Into what should be a simple hyperlink they add a redirect point that itself is targeted.
• Moar tracking.
• The redirect can go away at any time. There’s no guarantee these services will always be there.
