One of the nicest community features on medium and small servers is the Local timeline, which shows all public posts by people on that server.

You can see this on Mastodon's website interface by clicking "Local", or on the official Mastodon app by clicking the magnifying glass ๐Ÿ” and then "Community".

If you want to see the Local timeline of other servers, you can usually go to their website and click "Local". Also some apps support viewing them, such as Fedilab, Subway Tooter and Ice Cubes.

One of the best benefits I got by switching instances after getting onto Mastodon last fall. #TwitterMigration

@feditips The Hometown fork also allows users to post local-only (via an extra option in the web interface or by including a custom emoji), allowing for discussions only visible on the server.

This also works in tandem with the regular visibility options, so (for example) you could make a post that only your followers on the same server can see.

It seems like a very nice feature of the fediverse to be able to switch between the federated content and the local instance content. Especially for users on more specialised instances about fx. art.

The new app, @radiant also supports the local timeline.

I know you not the dev, but to say in general: I hate that one would have to dig to get to the local timeline on the app.

It's the TL i keep up with the most, and didnt like having to sift throu that each time.
