Alternatively, if you have a few hobby admins around it's actually pretty easy to self-host.

The official repo (https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon) comes with a docker-compose set-up (https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/blob/main/docker-compose.yml) which works very well for me.
