This feels like a somewhat overlapping/orthogonal feature that might not necessarily be a Mastodon-service feature. If the need is "know when someone has linked to your post", where "link" also means "an activitypub post was acted on in a way that includes the subject post as a link in the body", then sure, a ping from the server making/hosting the original post makes sense.

But the wider case is "know when people are talking about you"...

@darius @ryanrandall @jessamyn @dansinker This came up not so long ago in internet time on Metafilter, I (perhaps inaccurately) paraphrase, where people didn't realize other people were talking about their historic posts in a way leading to abuse.

*Then* it becomes a sort of reputational protection agent: let me know when there is activity that references my posts. And I don't know how you do that without crawling the entire Fediverse on the agent end, or how you'd do that on an instance end.
