I prefer the following:
- spend time with the project (join the IRC/matrix/mailing list/whatever)
- identify what people want to work on (like you said), and why,
- make UX contributions to those pieces of work
- take part in discussions as to why a UX improvement is needed, or
- suggest a way for some software design to be done *before* it's done.

Usually, there are good software contributors who 1) get it (i.e. "this design approach is better than what we were going to do), 2) are interested in trying something new (i.e. working with a UX designer), 3) are "converted" to the benefit of having UX design included at the beginning of something, or some other decision that UX contributions are useful/important/lead to better software.
