Usually, there are good software contributors who 1) get it (i.e. "this design approach is better than what we were going to do), 2) are interested in trying something new (i.e. working with a UX designer), 3) are "converted" to the benefit of having UX design included at the beginning of something, or some other decision that UX contributions are useful/important/lead to better software.
