I was told by my own mother (an EE and software developer) that if open source was any good it wouldn't be free. Nothing free was any good.

That mentality is very deep-seated, and it really hurts indie games too, since we can't charge more than about $10 without being laughed at, but people also aren't interested in inexpensive games because "they can't be any good or they'd cost more"

Ha, would've been an opportunity to lock up your ma in a room and leave her with the question "Please ponder if nothing free is any good".

Then return a bit later, release her and say "I am a freedom fighter, ma, don't you see? Freedom, that most precious thing we all crave. I help pursue it, so people can be free. Just like I release you now, I do so for others every day".

Your ma: "I thought free meant no money. You'd be poor."

You: "FOSS enriches, ma."
