I was told by my own mother (an EE and software developer) that if open source was any good it wouldn't be free. Nothing free was any good.

That mentality is very deep-seated, and it really hurts indie games too, since we can't charge more than about $10 without being laughed at, but people also aren't interested in inexpensive games because "they can't be any good or they'd cost more"
