There's a new groups system for the Fediverse called chirp.social. More info at:

➡️ chirp.social

You can join a group by following the group account. You can post to the group by @-ing the group account, which then reposts that to all its other followers

It is similar to the existing a.gup.pe system, but chirp.social allows a group manager to delete posts and ban people from the group.

It works on all Fediverse platforms including Mastodon.

@feditips what's the difference with following hashtags?

@feditips this is a positive step forward! maybe some of the Guppe groups more vulnerable to abuse could move there if it sticks around

@feditips Isn't it like a mailing-list, or a newsgroup rebuilt on top of HTTP+JSON? 🤔

I have a different issue. Sometimes when I get out of Mastodon, on the next entrance I'm at the same post I was at before, so I can continue.

But sometimes when I reenter, I'm placed on the most recent post, causing me to have to backtrack to where I last was.

That's pretty frustrating.

Another is when I decide to comment, I can't see the post I was going to comment on. I like to look at the post for reference.

@Kanter maybe this would be a good way to connect people around #nptech !

I would just strongly encourage people using these group systems to choose usernames that make it clear that they are a group and not a single user.

The normal expectation is that citing a username/handle is communicating with an individual actor. It can cause trouble when these go against that norm.

I wish this had been implemented within the protocol or UIs themselves, but until that happens...

#ActivityPub, #Mastodon, #aguppe, and #chirpsocial users should be careful.

@feditips do you have to belong to an instance to follow a group on chirp.social? In other words, can you only join/follow the group if you are already on Mastodon or elsewhere in the Fediverse? It seems to me you don't have to be on Mastodon to create a grroup, hence my question.

@feditips might they later try to monetize it or is it community?

FediTips has moved!

p.s. Just to make clear, the chirp.social system uses account addresses.

You create a group by registering on chirp.social. You join the group by following the group's account address. You post to the group by mentioning the group's account address.

More info about what account addresses are here: fedi.tips/how-to-use-mastodon-

Every account on the Fediverse has a unique account address.

So for example to join the Art group on chirp.social you follow @art

This looks really cool, except for this: "I'm using Firebase Authentication for sign-ups, so I can't see the passwords."

Firebase is a proprietary Google service. So, instead of the passwords being sent to chirp.social, which could hash it for security, it's sent to Google, and nobody knows what they do with it.

I wouldn't create a group on it for that reason. And I wouldn't consider it truly open source because of that dependency.
