You don't have to use Mastodon through an app!

Every server has its own website where you can log in and use all its features. The web interface is excellent, and it usually gets the latest features before the apps do.

Your server's website address will usually be the same as its name, for example the website for the server kind.social is at kind.social

The website works on both computers and phones. (If you're using the phone version, click # to see the search box.)

@feditips to be honest, the web interface installed as an app on my phone screen is perfect for every use case I need

@feditips I only moved to an app (Ice Cubes) because logging in at my server does not make it easy to quickly see the latest posts - Ice Cubes has that as a feature. If I have not beed near Mastodon for a day I don't want to scroll through hundreds of posts to catch up ... or is there a better solution to that?

@feditips it’s nice to have options! 👍️

@feditips this right here! I've only ever used the browser-based versions on desktop and mobile. I don't like apps in general, and keep as few on my phone as possible.

@feditips Indeed the web UI is pretty good! I default to @MonaApp though because it syncs where I left the timeline and I can just scroll upwards to see what's new. That has been my favorite timeline experience ever.

@feditips I can't use it because often it doesn't really remember my timeline position if I tap on a post to read other comments and then go back. 🤷‍♂️

@feditips I moved from the official app to Tusky. Much better experience now on mobile.

@feditips

but…

people want to.
They want a user interface that makes sense to them and their device.

People running to the fediverse from Reddit diaspora don’t the want the Fediverse manual of style as is, they want Reddit. Usenet styled Categories, up votes

Just as IPhone users chose Apollo over Reddits App. Presentation, framework and UI is important.

@feditips Laptop gets updated once a month. Since retirement, I quit using the computer. Use my phone. I know that the computer is much better for many reasons. I’ve worked with computers since 1993. I’m done. My laptop is my back up. 👍🏼 Good advice. 🏆

@feditips I won’t call the web interface excellent TBH.

Most of the apps though are some of the best in their class.

@feditips The truth is I think people get too carried away with apps, and they do cause a lot of problems.

@feditips nice tip, thanks. Haven't really tested it yet. Will do and decide which works better for me.
