Do you want to embed posts from Mastodon on your blog or website? Here's how:

1. Log in through your server's website
2. Go to the post you want to embed, click ⋯ and "Embed"
3. Copy and paste the HTML code into your own blog or website

Media people using Mastodon might want to especially take notice, this is how you can feature posts from here in your stories.

As a test, I've embedded this post on my website at fedi.tips/embedding-test

@feditips Just a heads up, the served HTML uses an iframe, so that breaks some some Web (and non-Web such as HTML newsletters) embedded post use cases.

@feditips Is there a quick and easy way to reference a prior third-party Mastadon toot if you're responding on Mastodon to someone else's toot, other than by direct URL in your toot?

@feditips The post does not fit very well in the embed.

@feditips Very interesting! I'm using WordPress over here. If you're using the WordPress Block Editor, paste the code into a Custom HTML block.

Alternatively, the Block Editor will try to create its own embed block if you copy/paste the link to post. At least on my theme, though, it doesn't look nearly as nice. Maybe someone who works on the WordPress Core could take a look at this!

@feditips Is it possible to embed your own instance's view of the post, rather than the original instance's?

That way it would not put the traffic burden on the original, would not expose your visitors' access patterns to the original, etc. but should still honor edits, deletion, etc. (and also would honor the author blocking your instance, I think).

@feditips just thought about this, is there a way to embed a Mastodon post on a @writefreely publication?

@feditips I’ve written some articles (linked below) about embedding posts/toots within several static site generators:

@feditips Any idea how to do it on a hosted Wordpress blog? When I tried, the script was stripped out of the HTML, so I tried simply entering the URL (as can be done with tweets) and got this. The post appears, but with a huge amount of empty space.

@feditips I can’t speak for other services, but I did it on Wordpress the same as posts from the other place. billswritingplace.wordpress.co

@feditips @leonido does this work with complete columns as well?

F.e. searching for some #hashtag?
