Actually, IMO the fediverse is missing an opportunity here.

Optional privacy focused ads (and “promoted content”) could be a thing. A nonprofit open source privacy focused ad platform with support from lemmy, mastodon, pixelfed, etc. could challenge the likes of Google while bringing dollars to the various projects.

Ads themselves aren’t inherently bad. When used sparingly and within context they can be useful for product discovvery, etc.

That's the idea for @brave , but it seems that they got a bit too dependent on the easy money from FTX/Solana and Binance and now are a bit lost on their original purpose (make it possible for users to monetise their work without relying on centralized platforms)

They talk so much about privacy, but never ever considered having their own Mastodon instance, which could have been funded by their token.
