There is a strong rumour going round that some Fediverse developers and admins have held secret discussions with Meta/Facebook under NDAs.

The Fediverse is supposed to be an alliance of open projects built by a broad grassroots base. Its devs/admins are not supposed to hold secret backroom discussions with people who have a horrific track record (theguardian.com/technology/202).

Facebook/Meta is in effect a sociopathic corporation (buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanm). Nothing good will come of talking to them.

@feditips i dont care if facebook will implement the activitypub protocolls into their servers. why should talk be a problem?

@feditips There is nothing wrong with non-public talks. The way the fediverse is setup even hostile actions make the creation of a new mainline federation possible. But I really do not see that happening.

@feditips fediverse developers need to pay or their shoes too. Devs are under no obligation to share your personal values. I bet Meta pays more than Buy Me a Cofeee does.

@feditips We may need to defederate mastodon.social, we should not use lemmy, nobody in the fediverse should talk to Meta... Apart from tips you give quite strong opinions.

@feditips Volunteering on an OSS project for a while does not suddenly mean you can no longer accept a job by any of the top paying employers on the planet.

@feditips is the similar to the silly/stupid rumor that Lemmy is run by fascists ? Seems to me there are a lot of rumors out there right now. Just don’t buy into that crap.

@feditips The #fediverse concept, as it has taken off over the past 12 months, is still new. We are going to get bad projects/devs, bad admins and bad communities for a while until it has bedded in.

It's a case of using the open protocol & distributed nature to react to the usual human BS/greed/power hunger rather than trying to prevent it, which would be a fruitless endeavour.

I suspect it will take a year or two before we start to see a stable fediverse community of communities emerge.

@feditips

I suspect an NDA about what Meta are planning is inevitable.

An NDA about the fediverse would be intolerables

@feditips followed this account to get tips and tricks about the fediverse, not see gossip being spread.

This is also a bad take in general. It would be unwise for an organization like this to NOT have talks with social media giants. Without discussion, there can be no understanding. Even if the understanding is “we will not support you,” that should be handled with civility, not by bluntly closing the door. And of course there would be an NDA for this type of meeting.

@feditips so Meta probably started worrying about their profits too. 99% of meta users use basic features of FB/WA/IG which are now easily replicated by fediverse apps.
It's going to be fun, I'd be interested in accessing FB groups with a fediverse account.

@feditips Isn't the whole point of the fediverse that it's decentralized and thereby less vulnerable to this kind of thing? If eg Lemmy were to get zucked, wouldn't we just collectively shrug and migrate?

@feditips Please don't damage your reputation by rumor mongering. If you know something for a fact, please let us know. If you have only heard things secondhand or thirdhand, perhaps it is better not to attack the reputations of admins and spread fear without any evidence.

@feditips Lacking technical means to keep Meta from starting a service running #activitypub you're going to have to rely on social means. I actually think Meta starting one is a good thing. I mean, let's see if #decentralization does what people say it does, right?

For everyone questioning the value of this rumor, check out this exchange, where the developer of Pixelfed all but confirms it:
