European Commissioner Thierry Breton just joined Mastodon!

His first post, published right after a call with Elon Musk, made it clear that there is still huge work ahead for Twitter to comply with EU law:

1. Reinforce content moderation
2. Tackle disinformation
3. Implement transparent policies based on objective criteria (i.e., not via Twitter polls)
4. Limit targeted advertising
5. Prepare for an independent audit

It’s nothing but smoke and mirrors what Mr. Musk promised during the above mentioned convo. In fact he’s sending freshly registered on Dec 1 2022 troll accounts on Mastodon trying to flood the discussion and discourage people from complaining about the absolute anarchy that Twitter become with COVID19/vaccine denialism, antisemitism, racism, LGBTQ-phobia and nobody is enforcing any rules against disinformation there. It’s a shame it’s still available in EU

@EU_Commission @EC_Commissioner_Breton is mastodon following these requirements already? How does this work in a federated system?

@EU_Commission @EC_Commissioner_Breton He's not going to like this. I think these are some great things that should be done. I don't know what power that Musk will acknowledge from the EU, but maybe you'll have a positive impact.

@EU_Commission @EC_Commissioner_Breton Define "disinformation". You let Covid19 disinformation run rampant including the myth that it's over, that herd immunity is possible against a rapidly mutating novel virus, and that it somehow is a bioweapon and simultaneously a hoax; you label anything that dissents from your lies about Ukraine and the war you helped start there as disinformation; you let right-wing extremists have free reign to harass, doxx, and incite violence against LGBTQ+ persons.

@EU_Commission @EC_Commissioner_Breton I wonder what the EU's end goal with legally enforced content moderation is? Will this law be burdensome for small sites like Mastodon instances, while bigtech can afford all the expensive lawyers to confirm to the regulations?

@EU_Commission @EC_Commissioner_Breton There is no way Musk will comply with #3 - implement transparent policies. Musk has made it clear that all decisions are up to him and him alone, and he can do whatever he wants. Example: his policy toward Kanye West.

Let’s pressure the Government of Canada to follow the EU Commissioner’s lead and remove access to Twitter from Canada unless Musk cleans up his hate promotion platform masquerading as an interest in “ free speech”.

@EC_Commissioner_Breton @EU_Commission now log off and never return, until you figure out what freedom is.
