Different server types can have very different sets of features, so it's common for people on the Fediverse to have separate accounts on different server types.

For example, someone might have a Mastodon account for discussions and a PeerTube account for publishing long videos.

Honestly, account fatigue is a real thing. I don't *want* to create more accounts on other server types, just to even browse them. It would be nice to at least browse them from Mastodon itself. And vice versa, be able to browse Mastodon from other Fediverse server types (though, many Mastodon instances DO let you browse them without an account already, so...).
