I really have high hopes for Bonfire ( @bonfire) in this regard :) Bonfire seems to be built exactly to empower people as part of multiple communities. Mastodon focusses on an individual, and empowers that individual to relate to all others in the fediverse. But as an individual, not as a community.

Yes, @bonfire is taking a great approach and sets direction to explore the full potential of the Fediverse. But also these kind of extensions work best if there's some kind of standardization to them, and other apps can integrate / be interoperable. Here there's not a good outlook currently, as collab / coordination is currently not well organized at all.
