I'm sorry for not responding to issues and PRs promptly.

Between @pixelfed, @fedidb, @supapp and pubkit I have my hands full.

That said, I'm making an effort to be a better maintainer and encourage contributions.

See for yourself, this is the comment that started this, compare that to the before (from 2 hours ago) vs after (now)

I hope y'all don't think of me that way, I strive to be the best maintainer I can be, let me know your thoughts on how I can improve

❤️

@dansup @pixelfed @fedidb @supapp Been there. It’s easy to forget that publishing code like this comes with a cost & responsibility. I had to learn that the hard way.

My recommendation is to find a core group of maintainers that you trust & collaborate with. That way it’s not all on you. You can delegate certain tasks to them and focus on what you want to accomplish, where your skills are best applied

@dansup @pixelfed @fedidb @supapp
A failure to delegate brings mental exhaustion and collapse. So delegation isn't a preferred way of working but an existential necessity.

Even if it is objectively true that others would do a less good job (it probably isn't) that is no justification.

Casting yourself as 'lead developer' would likely compound the problem, with no real change + a slice of managing.

Better to split into bite sized projects, reducing the load on you in real terms.

I understand oss maintainer is a thankless job. Thank you for your work.

As to how you can improve? Well, you could solve just three more issues. You will be rewarded well for your allegiance.

Since you ask for feedback... ...

Firstly, I ask that you read this as observational and not criticism. I think you will read this as a moan, but it is NOT.

I have been thinking for some time on how best to approach you regarding Pixelfed, as there seems to be little maintenance and more focus on new features -- little of which have made it to a full package release yet and live on the main server only.

I have about ten or so open issues, some for several months. As a user/admin I log these as they fundamental affect the operation of how the site runs. They are not being attended to. I could add many more little niggles which would make the user/admin experience far easier but I saw little point.

I can see that you are very talented and have so many wonderful ideas. However, you need to try to focus to complete AND find a good support team to assist you. We've all see lots of enthusiastic posts from you stating that something was launching in a few days, or later today. Then nothing happens.

I get that -- you are excited to show us and then it hits a problem (time or bugs). I'd strongly suggest managing users' (that is us) expectations better by saying nothing until you are comfortable with launching.

I also think you need to undertake user acceptance testing before launch. I have no idea what currently happens, but I feel (and could be very wrong here) that when you are happy with something it is launched. However, you are missing things that others who are new to that feature would quickly pick up on. A crude example: some things take about five clicks to get you to a point you regularly use. For you as the dev, you will think nothing of it as you quickly race through, but as a user it can be like WTF?!

All that said, Dan I see you as a very talented young man. I am amazed at the time you put into this and I (and thousands of others) are very grateful. You need to find a small team for PR, Support, Dev, testing.

I also can't wait to see more on Sup -- It sounds amazing. However, your mental health is important to you and us.

Think about how we an help you, please.

Now, delete, block, hate me!
😆
