Oh wow... just spotted a "Translate" button being tested on mastodon.online... See the screenshot attached to this post.

In case you're wondering, it doesn't do much when I click it, just turns into "Translated from German". No one is speaking in German and the posts are marked as being in English.

@feditips What I would love to see in addition is a manual translate mode where I can switch between languages and self-translate them. A follower could then read the post in the preferred language.

But I guess this is much more complicated.

Will the Apertium engine be available too in the future? Not all languages are on DeepL or LibreTranslate

@feditips That is interesting! I know Google automatically translates posts on the web while within the app I can just highlight the text & translate via Google. It’s very handy as I follow accounts who communicate in Japanese, Spanish, German, French, etcetera.
