I have a theory. It's insane and stupid, which depressingly means it's probably right.

I suspect they stopped making transparent outsides to hide the fact that there was less and less inside, and to make us more afraid to try and open them to fix stuff ourselves.

Cheaper manufacturing plus built in obsolescence, it's really a win-win for the makers and a lose-lose for the buyers.

But go on, enjoy your soulless grayscale hunks of opaque plastic.
