I'm working to improve the @pixelfed mobile app onboarding.

It will probably be seen as more controversial than the Mastodon app.

I'm okay with that.

Some people claim we're emulating popular platforms as if it's a bad thing, like we're selling user data or building communities without safety and moderation.

Ignore them, growth isn't a bad thing, we need to make the easy to join, and moderate!

Every fedi project emulates an existing service, nothing is new lol

@dansup @pixelfed I think the problems are more to do with the organization behind Mastodon, and how it dominates the Fediverse...the more applications we have, and the more promotion they get, the better, so that we can kick Mastodon down to the rung that it belongs, and keeping it from dominating the Fediverse space.

@dansup @pixelfed Will pixelfed.social become the default instance ?

@dansup @pixelfed what about building in an instance cap size, that would go a long way to ensure that #pixelfed doesn't go the centralized way of #mastodon ?

@dansup @pixelfed if this post is about setting up a default server PLEASE dont go down the rout mastodon has taken. Like seriously as someone who has continually hyped pixelfed for years and have been interacting with you since the beginning, having a default server set in the mobile apps is the wrong way to make onboarding easier. There are so many other ways we can go about this

Yep, but we don't wont to emulate the bad bits of the #dotcons, but as you point out we don't have a spoken way to judge what is good and bad. This is dangerous BLOCKING on our part #4opens #openweb are ideas to move away from this mess making.

@dansup @pixelfed (I assume this means Pixelfed.social is becoming the default instance)

How big is Pixelfed.social? I think people are right to worry about centralization, but I feel like the difference in scale differentiates Pixelfed from mastodon. In the latter case, we’re talking about one instance that dominates not just the platform it runs, but the entire fediverse. (And similarly, there’s a lack of hi-quality PF instances to join compared to Masto.)

@dansup @pixelfed Why not see others?

For example, go to f-droid and install Nextcloud. Open and see how they deal with multiple servers.

Screenshot of Nextcloud app. It asks for start a session or choose a provider. Also helps you to hosts your own server.

I like the fact, that on here developers take the time to ask for, and listen to feedback, so we can improve the services offered.

There has been incidents where big tech has made big changes then faced a barrage of objections, forcing a u-turn. So by engging there is less risk of this.

Keep up the good work, You are all doing a great job.
