As you may have noticed, mastodon.social was broken for serveral hours, possibly a DDoS attack.

While this is an unusual situation, it might be a good idea to have a second account on another server for exactly this kind of situation, so that you aren't cut off from the network if one server is having problems.

The second account could be for different kind of content, for example.

(There is no mirroring feature in Mastodon.)

@feditips Maybe unrelated, but I saw this news online yesterday from GovInfoSecurity.com: U.S. government and industry authorities are warning the healthcare sector of a surge in distributed-denial-of-service attacks in recent days against hospitals and other medical entities instigated by Russian nuisance hacking group KillNet.

@feditips
Could you tell me more about the mirroring?
Is this "manual" mirroring or a feature of mastodon? Like a continuous migration?

@feditips
I'm not sure how practical this advice is for most people. It's one thing to empower users with the ability to leave. It's another to make them responsible for their own HA. I'm personally struggling with just 4 accounts, and I'm trying to mostly use one.

@feditips Or, just, don't use mastodon.social as your main server...

@feditips If we could somehow turn everyone's device to their own server (or at least their own backup), would this be more "distributed" and ''robust" in some way?

I found my friendica and pixelfed accounts useful when indieweb.social went down for a short spell.

@feditips I fool these DDoSers by being on an instance so small and cheap it falls over on its own!

@feditips
Don't know about anyone else, but i am just a person not a computer (doing an automatic backupthingi). So i'll stay with just one account. If that'd brake down bc of the instance i just start over. Not such a big deal (for me at least) It's more the (steady) communication here i'm interested in not "collecting" followers or something.

Thanks for the warning/tipp anyway 🖖

@feditips So far the #Fediverse withstands these things remarkably well. Just like the recent troll attacks on instances operated by people from Ukraine. I'm quite impressed.

Can you tell me how I can get my home feed to refresh without scrolling down? Sometimes, it stays on the last post before the refresh - which I love! i just read the posts upwards.
BUT sometimes it refreshes and scrolls through everything I haven't read, so I have to scroll down and find the last post I read.
I can't figure out why it does one thing one time and another thing the next time. 😞
