If an internet post is public, anyone can see it. To control who sees your posts, you need to use a non-public visibility setting.

On Mastodon, the non-public visibility settings are:

๐Ÿ”’ "Followers only" - Only your followers can see this post. If you use this, it's important to also switch on follow requests. Otherwise anyone can follow you to instantly see your followers-only posts.

@ "Mentioned only" - Only people you @ within the post will see it.

@feditips Everything you send to servers you do not personally control should be assumed to be public. If not now, then eventually.

@feditips Why is it "followers only" and not "followees only"? Wouldn't it make more sense to be able to post only to people that I've followed, which puts the control into my hands and not into other people's?

@feditips Depending on the app you use, these visibility options could be named differently and / or listed in a different order than you expect. Should common terminology and order be used across apps? @ivory @mammoth @Mastodon @tootapp
