You can create threads on Mastodon using the traditional method:

1. Post first part of thread
2. Reply to first part with second part
3. Reply to second part with third etc

Some third-party apps and services also have thread creation tools.

It's a good idea to number threads so that people who notice one part will explore the rest.

Also, set first post to "public" visibility but replies to "unlisted", to avoid filling public timelines.

@feditips You could also use Pleroma-based Fediverse software that features a more generous limit regarding post lenght while still supporting most features Mastodon has

@feditips I’ve found it best to post all subsequent posts as replies to the first post. That way, all posts are displayed by clicking on the first post vs each post appearing singly with a reply, which requires a separate click for each subsequent reply.
(Hope that makes sense)
I’m using the generic Mastodon app.

@feditips
So, if you set the subsequent posts to unlisted, and someone from the public clicks on the first post, they will see the whole thread?

Also, I type it up in Mastodon until I near the limit, then copy to Notepad, then ditto for 2nd post, etc., then when I'm at the end I can add the right numbering (e.g. 1/9), and copy them from Notepad back to Mastodon and post them. This also helps with getting the right char count for each, cos of things like URLs only counting for 23 chars, etc.

@feditips Now I just need something worthwhile to post as a thread. 😎

@feditips I still don’t understand why people want to post long posts to a medium specifically designed for short posts.

@feditips
I'd definitely emphasise the unlisted thing. I see so many threads that fill my entire timeline because people don't know this. I want to read the entire thread anyway but I don't want it to block out everything else on my timeline.
