There are four timelines on Mastodon:

HOME - Posts from people & hashtags you follow, in chronological order

EXPLORE - Trending posts, tags, links (on the official apps click the magnifying glass and leave search empty to see Explore)

LOCAL - All public posts from your server (on official apps click the magnifying glass 🔍 then scroll to Community tab). This works much better on small-medium size servers.

FEDERATED - All public posts your server can see. Not available on official apps.

@feditips tusky no longer has the federated timeline either unfortunately. If it does, it's disappeared from mine.

@feditips Thanks for this post. I'd been wondering why I only see the same people posting and had assumed that Mastodon was no longer being used that often. Sounds dumb, I know, but I never noticed or thought about the local/federated functions on the sidebar.

@feditips Everyday. Something. New. What are "official apps"? Mastodon? Tusky? Yes? No?

@feditips Wouldn't it be more clear and transparent for #Mastodon to call #Explore "Trending"? The word "explore" conveys little. Let's try to not force people to learn a dictionary in order to participate here.

@feditips
Definitely "No.".. there are only three: Home, Explore and Live Feed.

@feditips Yeah, you might want to consider updating this. A lot of instances running Mastodon v4.1.4 don't have the local and federated feeds in the web interface. They've been replaced with "Live feeds" which has separate tabs for "This server" (local), "Other servers" (federated), and "All" (both combined, I think).

Not all seem to have it. I'm not sure if this is a feature of the nightly versions or something optional set by the admin.

@feditips that’s at least two too many, at least from perspective of top-level user-facing information architecture.

@feditips it's a shame there isn't a "For You" page that would suggest content based on the stuff I already follow
