Hey new people and those thinking of joining, you do NOT need to sign up on huge servers!

You can follow and interact with people on any server from any server, the servers are connected.

It would really, really help the network right now if you could sign up on medium or small size servers. You will still be able to follow and interact with whoever you want, and the network as a whole will work much better.

A good safe place for beginners to find servers to join is joinmastodon.org/servers

@feditips That’s great but I don’t think you inderstand how fully confused I am here. Fully

@feditips Apologies, but I have no idea what signing up on a server means.

@feditips

Asking people to pick servers when they don't understand the system just isn't ever going to work the way people running the system think it is.

@feditips this seems like good advice, but I was only able to see this post after signing up... on one of those big servers...

The onboarding process here is rough.

@feditips I wish I understood what I was doing when I was signing up. It was so confusing.

I'm still on the fence about #Westworld being cancelled. I would have loved to see how they would have wrapped up the whole thing. Hopefully they'll make a movie.

If Deadwood can get a movie, and Community can get a movie, Westworld can get a movie.

@feditips How do I know what server I'm on?

@feditips what happens if a new-ish small-ish server goes out of business though?

@feditips it’s a bit confusing to everyone that’s signing up. It’s not very intuitive for common non tech folk like me. It’s also not very intuitive how to change servers once you’ve signed up to a particular one… anyways things could be way more simplified and smooth …that’s all.

@feditips I can’t find anyone on here! When I search for a person I know has an account, I always get “no results.”

@feditips is anyone able to help advise on how to transfer instances…? Much appreciated!

@feditips Would it make sense to create some kind of an aggregator sign-up platform, from where people could chose their favourite instance? Some comfortable landing page from where the transition would feel easy and smooth? Twitter customers may not feel easy with a temptation they can't fathom yet.

@feditips hey, I’m trying to join smaller servers in the provided link but it keeps insisting my password is incorrect but it’s not because it’s the same one I logged in with here, not sure if it’s a glitch.

@feditips
I'm new here (from that other place) so apologies if this is a dumb question, but I don't see any sciencey (not technology) servers. Am I missing something?

@feditips it’s hard to decide what server to use if we don’t use a large one because we don’t know the rules each one has before you do all the work to switch I think?

@feditips I wish I had seen this beforeI signed up but it was an impulsive move.

@feditips Maybe this should be noted on the sign up page. It would, at the very least, make it less stressful for us newbies. Thanks!

@feditips If they’re connected, why can’t we join more than one server? Is the goal eventually a decentralized protocol using Blockchain?
