Hey new people and those thinking of joining, you do NOT need to sign up on huge servers!

You can follow and interact with people on any server from any server, the servers are connected.

It would really, really help the network right now if you could sign up on medium or small size servers. You will still be able to follow and interact with whoever you want, and the network as a whole will work much better.

A good safe place for beginners to find servers to join is joinmastodon.org/servers

@feditips what servers are best for either #engineering or #judaism?

@feditips I have to ask - I set up a server for myself and basically nothing discovery-related seems to work, is this expected? Explore is empty, hashtag search never returns anything (even for tags I know have been used by people I'm following), etc. If I head to mastodon.social, all of this stuff seems populated and functional. Have I set something up wrong or are those features server-local?

@feditips I’m feeling pretty dumb here, to be honest. If you can access any server from any server, what are the benefits of joining a specific server?

@feditips Just a question. What happens if somebody closes down the server where I have my account?

@feditips Hi Daniel,

We follow on twitter & I've just followed you here.

Only joined this week & haven't done much but will spend more time on here in the future.

Cheers mate.

"Blame the designer." β€” Donald Norman, The Philosophy of Everday Things

This problem of massive onboarding was easily anticipated. Investment in novice-oriented documentation and thinking of this as much as a social challenge as a technical one would be a good lesson for us tech savvy types to take away from this.

The "Read the Manual" ethos is a poor fit for novices. We, the experts, can do a much better at this.

@feditips Took your advice re: Instances and switched. I have only been on here for about 8 hours anyway so if anything got lost in transit... so be it!

@feditips I made this initial mistake, and it's clear now that it's probably better to try to find servers with like-minded people instead. If nothing else, at least then your local feed will likely be more relevant!

@feditips Do you know of a method that smaller racks can be backup for the operation of the main servers? I'm willing to give up bandwidth, CPU, and GB in a docker for the betterment of my home server instance that someone else hosts.

Does that make sense?
