The reason I obsessively play magicians in RPGs even though they're quite stale is because, when I was young and playing D&D, the concept of "spellbooks" was in full play and the concept of "you learn spells when you level up" was not.

As a magician, my power was to cast "whatever spells I could randomly find in the world".
