Too bad it's impossible to verify through a #Wordpress site without adding *another* plugin to the mountain of plugins we already have to manage.

WHY can't they validate using a simple file added to the domain, or even to text added to a page?

Mastodon verification works fine on WordPress, it is just text added to the page, you don't need any plugins. I verified through my site at https://fedi.tips for example.
