I'm guessing they're inaccurate even w/out the duplicate staging. Like all social media, Mastodon has bots (not all nefarious, of course). Odds are very high that the bots are not removed from the count.

People who are interested in user/post counts want to see real, human user quantification. When they see the numbers, that is what they assume they're seeing. So, including the bots is misleading.

But, I also understand the difficulty of parsing bot/real. It's a clusterf*ck.
