.ART and Defederation

Last night I got into a conversation about .ART deciding to defederate from another server. The reasons for doing this were explained by the admin (racism) and I understand those reasons. I agree with the decision.

But then a user from another instance insisted that this is anti "free speech", blocking an entire instance because of a few "bad apples" and only the individuals should be blocked.

And they were insistent that "free speech" is paramount

I disagreed (as did others), and eventually they told us they were muting the conversation, "for their own mental health".

I now appear to be blocked by them🙄.

It appears that, for them, freedom of speech (particularly their own) was more important than my freedom to choose who I interact with. More important than my freedom to choose to exist in an environment where people aren't abused because, you know, "freedom of speech". (2/n)

@GrumpyMark I don't know how blocking an instance is against free speech, given that .social and its toots and users can be accessed from other publicly available instances.
